Shell Energy broadband

Why choose Shell Energy broadband?

Shell Energy has a relatively simply broadband offering, but there are a few reasons why you might want to choose this provider:

  • No connection fee – Whether you are choosing regular broadband, superfast fibre or ultrafast full fibre, there is no connection fee.
  • Call plans – Shell Energy’s regular broadband plans include line rental and pay as you go calls, but there’s always the option to add evening and weekend calls, anytime calls or international calls to your package. Call plans include unlimited talktime on UK landline and mobile. Full Fibre plans don’t come with a phone line though, since it is delivered via a fibre optic cable to your home.
  • Award-winning UK call centre – Shell Energy, back when it was called First Utility, won awards from Good Housekeeping and The Institute of Customer Service for the work of its UK-based call centre. That same call centre also supports its broadband service.

What does Shell Energy broadband offer?

Shell Energy broadband offers uncomplicated packages with no upfront fee and a discount for energy customers. It doesn’t sell TV subscriptions or mobile contracts: it’s purely about broadband and landline packages.

  • ADSL broadband – The cheapest Shell Energy broadband deal is an ADSL line with an average speed of 11Mbps known as Fast Broadband. There’s no upfront fee on any of Shell Energy’s broadband packages, and all come with unlimited downloads and 18-month contracts.
  • Fibre broadband– Shell Energy offers two fibre broadband packages: Superfast Fibre and Superfast Fibre Plus, providing average speeds of 38Mbps and 67Mbps, respectively
  • Ultrafast broadband– Shell Energy offers Ultrafast Fibre and Ultrafast Fibre Plus packages, with download speeds of 145Mbps and 290Mbps, respectively. However, this is available to an increasing proportion of the population but is far from universal. Check out our guide to ultrafast broadband for more information.
  • Full Fibre broadband– Finally, Shell Energy now also offers a very wide range of next-generation Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband on the market. Their 'Full Fibre' packages provide average speeds ranging from 109Mbps all the way up to a blistering 944Mbps. Again, availability has been limited until recently, but Openreach's FTTP network has expanded quickly over the last couple of years. Like many providers, Shell Energy Broadband doesn't include a landline as standard with its Full Fibre packages.
  • Home phone – Other than their Full Fibre services, all Shell Energy Broadband packages come with pay-as-you-go calls as standard. You can add Evening and Weekend calls, which includes calls to 01, 02 and 03 numbers as well as standard UK mobiles between 7pm and 7am Monday to Friday and from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday. Anytime Calls covers the same types of numbers but at any time of day. Anytime Plus includes calls to EU landlines as well. An International Calls can be bolted on to any of these packages and allows calls to landlines in 54 countries as well as providing a 50% discount on calls to other countries or to mobiles abroad. The calls may last 60 minutes after which you’ll need to hang up and redial to keep using the deal.
